EXECUTIVE GOLF NEWS: DECEMBER 2006
Message From Darcy
I hope everyone had a great Christmas. My best gift was the chance to play Champlain on Christmas Eve on a beautiful sunny seven-degree day. Yes, it was a little soggy but I didn't hear a single complaint. In other great news, the Nation is back on board for 2007 and we've added Kingsway Park to our course list.

If you've never tried indoor golf, your should give it a shot. We have three great indoor facilities on board and a new league every Tuesday at Bent Grass and Virtual Sports Zone, and every Thursday at Golf-O-Max Gatineau. You can play nine or 18 holes and you don't have to make a season-long commitment. Check out the details here.

We're taking a crew of 30 to see the Sens pummel the Sabres on Saturday, February 24. It's a package deal with a steak dinner at Local Heroes and shuttle to and from the game for $80 (taxes in), so I hope you'll join us. Details and sign-up info here.

Swing easy in the new year!

How I improved my outdoor game by playing indoors over the winter

By Gabriel Louli

For the past two years I have played winter golf indoors in a league at Bent Grass Golf in Bells Corners. I joined because I love the game and could not bear the five months of darkness (aka no golf) that winter brings. I learned it could help my outdoor game by working on the 7 keys which are required to play better indoor golf.

These keys helped hone the parts of my game that most affect scoring:

  1. Get the ball in play
  2. Make clean contact
  3. Manage obstacles / mistakes
  4. Visualization in short game and escape shots
  5. Tempo in full swing and putting
  6. Roll with the punches
  7. Putting is the easiest way to lower your score

Our man on the inside, Craig, can set you up with a dozen Dimplits for $40 a dozen, taxes in. The Dimplit is not an entry-level ball and its popularity in the U.S. is growing rapidly. Expect to see a PGA player wearing the Dimplit ball cap on tour in the very near future. Contact Craig directly if you want a dozen.

JFK's Irreverent Golf
Confessions of a golf “Prima Donna”

“My name is John Kennedy and I’m a Prima Donna”. These are the words I recite each week at the beginning of my Prima Donnas Anonymous (PDA) meeting. You see, the Prima Donna is never really cured. Dealing with Prima Donnaism is a life long battle of day-to-day victories and the occasional setback. It’s something I’m forced to deal with every day, or more specifically, during every round of golf.

They say that with any affliction of this type the first step to recovery is admitting there’s a problem. My personal epiphany came one September morning in 1997 in a cheap hotel room in Cornwall, Ontario, next to Archie’s Driving Range. I awoke from a drunken stupor to find a sign taped to the exterior of my hotel room door which read: “Do not disturb – Prima Donna at rest!” The fact that I was once again waking up from a drunken stupor points to another problem – but we won’t get into that. I later found out that the sign had been posted by my good friend, and Executive Golf’s own, Darcy Jenkins. His own one man, personal intervention I guess you can say.

I’m writing this article to help other golfers avoid the mistakes I’ve made. Are you a Prima Donna? And if you are how would you even know? To help you out I offer you some tell tale signs of advanced Prima Donnaism. I know what you’re saying, that kind of stuff only happens to other people. Well I’m here to tell you that anyone can fall victim to Prima Donnaism, young or old, rich or poor, weak or strong. To quote the memorable RAP lyrics of J-Roc of Trailer Park Boys fame when he got caught committing a lewd act: “It could happen to you, ‘cause it happened to me”. Read on...
