Jan. 31, 2012 Recap
This week’s chosen course, the Belfry of Ryder Cup fame, proved to be the toughest course the league has played so far this year. The course yielded one birdie all day, ceded only three of a possible six closest to the pins, and the two hardest holes gave up but a single par. It was Gabe’s opinion that that he knows exactly where all the water from the rain in England goes: it all ends up at the Belfry!
At one point someone was overheard complaining that he needed to learn to hit the ball lower, which quickly garnered a response that what the individual really needs to do first is to learn how to hit the ball.
Last week’s first two stars, Bob and Greg, were brought back to earth this go round. Or, as the old air force expression goes, “they crashed and burned.”
First star this week was Mark who returned to form after a couple of sub par outings. Taking closest to the pin on #7 (36ft) and #14 (92ft), longest drives on #3 (236yds) and #17 (211yds), he posts the 2nd best score of 88 as well as winning his match against Bob on the 17th hole and gives himself a little breathing room at the top of the points board.
Gabe, without Bob’s voodoo curse on him, fires a 41 on the front nine and then holds on for dear life on the next nine as the course proceeded to take back everything it gave up on the front nine. He goes on to win both his matches against Greg and Glyn, earning himself second star status.
Glyn, again struggling with the intricacies of putting and chipping indoors, was overheard, after only four holes, to opine that he likely wouldn’t be earning his tour card this year. Time to fire your caddie, Glyn.
At one point Bob was having so much trouble he tried to put a hex on himself. Not only did it not work, but the appearance of an elderly gentleman flittering his fingers at his own chest seemed to un-nerve non-league members who happened to be in the vicinity. I suspect we looked like the group from the movie “The Dream Team” out from the mental institution on a recreation run!
Three putts put another $6 into the kids fund, bringing the total so far to $19.50.
Next week will see the old coots returning to the continent and Austin Texas for a round at Barton Creek.
New players are always welcome!
